Couple’s home comes with Danish Modern furniture

Dear John: The home we purchased recently came fully furnished. Two of the pieces, as I have discovered, are vintage Danish. One is a Dyrlund credenza and the other a Domino Mobler cabinet. I am attaching photos. What value might these pieces have? — J.W., Homosassa

Dear J.W.: The Dyrlund Furniture Company and the Domino Mobler Furniture Company that made your two pieces are recognized makers of mid-century Danish Modern furniture. The Domino Mobler Company is considered one of the leading pioneers of Danish Modern styles.

The Dyrlund Company started business in the village of Rude, Denmark in 1960. The label on your credenza is the first mark used by the company. In 1980 the mark was changed to solid red and in 1990 changed to a round gold mark. There is considerable secondary market interest in Danish Modern furniture. However, prices are low, allowing for very affordable buys when compared to new retail prices for the same styles currently being produced by both makers. Currently if you were to get $500 each it would be par for the course.

Dear John: I have a beautiful set of china from England. My husband inherited it from his family, when his dad passed. He said he used to eat from it only on Thanksgiving. His mom called it her Thanksgiving dishes. It comes with eight of each dinner piece and creamer and sugar with lid, serving bowls with lids and platters. My husband ate from it as a child. He is now 75 years old, so it is quite old.

Can you tell me about it and if it has any value? If so, what is the value? We will never use it. — J., Inverness

Dear J.: I suspect your story about your set of china being used for special occasions like Thanksgiving has triggered Remember When moments for many of our readers, myself included. The pretty decorative set you have was made in England in the Staffordshire district. It is made of earthenware and the decoration is a transfer print applied to the surface. The maker of the set was Myott, Son & Co. They have been in business since the late 19th century. The company used a series of marks over time, and likely produced your set before World War II. The pattern is Bonnie-Dundee. There is no specific collector interest.

Potential dollar values are based on the pattern interest in the china replacement marketplace. To discover what that value is, contact Replacements Ltd.; they might be interested in buying the pieces you have. The phone number is 1-800-REPLACE (737-5223). Good luck.
