If You Love Wicker This Is the Furniture Collection for You

It all started with a furniture order. ELLE Decor A-List interior designer Sarah Bartholomew was working on a project in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and needed a custom wicker dining chair. She reached out to Mainly Baskets Home, an Atlanta-based rattan-focused company founded in 1977. Fast-forward to today, and Bartholomew is now launching the company's first-ever design collaboration, called the Cape collection.

"Our aesthetics are very simpatico," says Robyn Bailey, owner of Mainly Baskets Home. "I literally just reached out to Sarah and started a conversation that was so easy, I knew it was a fit."

Similarly, the Nashville-based Bartholomew—an avowed fan of wicker ever since her first furniture purchase of a wicker bed at age 12—was thrilled to collaborate with Mainly Baskets Home, as she had been hoping to design a collection of classic wicker pieces at an accessible price point. As the name suggests, the 20-piece Cape collection is inspired by the sea coast in the northeastern United States. But Bartholomew says the real inspiration goes deeper.

"Two of my design icons, Hubert de Givenchy and Marella Agnelli, both had a love of wicker, and initially, the collection was influenced by the classic vintage pieces I have long loved," she says. "Tear sheets from Givenchy's vaulted atelier at Le Jonchet, the poolhouse at Le Clos Fiorentina—as well as Marella Agnelli's many rooms filled with wonderful wicker silhouettes—have been front and center on my inspiration board for years. The braid motif that runs through the collection was inspired by those iconic rooms, as well as a beautiful vintage collection of wicker chairs and sofas owned by one of my best friends that I have long admired."

The new collection was supposed to have launched during the Spring 2020 High Point Market, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But pieces from the line are now available for preorder and will start shipping in May.
