IKEA Has Designed Furniture Forts You Can Build at Home

If you never made a makeshift furniture fort as a kid, you're truly missing out. There's just something so special about having a cozy little hideout to retreat to during the day. As I'm sure we're all looking for boredom-busting things to do at home (especially with kids), IKEA Russia recently released instructions on how to create your own play houses using common items household pieces such as blankets, bedspreads, chairs, and stools.

The idea was developed by creative agency Instinct, using popular IKEA furniture pieces. However, many of these models can be built with similar furniture. We've outlined the building materials you'll need for each furniture fort. Try it out and get creative with it— if you don't have a certain item, brainstorm what you could use in place of it. IKEA Russia invites you to share your creations on social media using the hashtag #StayHome.

Castle Furniture Fort

You'll need: four dining room chairs, one clothing/coat stand, two sheets, 16 clothespins, one string light set, one rug, and three pillows to sit on inside.

House Furniture Fort

You'll need: one table, two sheets, 10 clothespins, eight books, one lamp/lantern, and one stuffed animal.

Wigwam Furniture Fort

You'll need: one hat or coat stand, two sheets, eight books, one rope, one string light set, three pillows, and 10 binder clips.

Cave Furniture Fort

You'll need: one armchair, one sheet, eight books, one string light set, one roll of tape, and three pillows to sit on.

Furniture Fortress

You'll need: one sofa, two sheets, 10 clothespins, one throw, and three pillows to sit on.

Camping Tent Furniture Fort

You'll need: one clothing rack, two sheets, eight books, 10 clothespins, one hanging dryer, and one string light set.

Here, one mom helped her kids assemble the castle model! It looks like they didn't have a clothing/coat stand available, but were still able to make a super neat hideaway. Love it!
